Marcos cruised into the second round of the US Open on Wednesday, defeating Japanese qualifier Go Soeda 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 at Flushing Meadows.
Marcos stormed to victory in one hour and 31 minutes, finishing just in time before play was rained off for several hours in New York. He edged a close first set, breaking Soeda in the 10th game with a forehand winner that painted the line. He then broke the Japanese player in the eighth game of the second set before serving out to love for a two-set lead.
After receiving treatment for a left knee injury, sustained chasing down a short ball towards the end of the second set, Marcos dominated the third set. He broke in the third, fifth and seventh games, clinching victory with a driven backhand return that drew an error from Soeda.
Marcos goes on to face either Daniel Brands or Kevin Anderson as he bids to reach the third round in New York for the first time.
