Tipsarevic Beats Marcos In LA

Saturday, 31 July, 2010

Marcos exited the Farmers Classic at the quarter-final stage on Friday in Los Angeles when he was beaten by sixth seed Janko Tipsarevic 6-3, 7-5.

Tipsarevic played the more attacking tennis in the first set, dictating the play and keeping Marcos on the back foot throughout, and he was rewarded with a break of serve in the sixth game to lead 4-2. It was a lead he would not relinquish as he went on to close out a one-set lead.

The Serbian capitalised on his momentum by breaking serve at the start of the second set, with aggressive play forcing the errors from Marcos. Marcos worked hard to maintain the deficit at just the one service break and his resilience paid off in the sixth game as he was able to draw level at 3-3.

Marcos had the chance to level the match when he held a set point on Tipsarevic’s serve in the 10th game, but strong play from the Serbian firmly closed the door on that opportunity as he held for 5-5. Marcos then paid the price for two costly double faults in the 11th game as Tipsarevic broke serve to lead 6-5 before serving out victory in one hour and 39 minutes.

Marcos will now turn his attention to the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington D.C., beginning on Sunday. He has been seeded eighth and received a bye through the first round.
