Marcos Wins Wimbledon Thriller

Wednesday, 01 July, 2015

Marcos roared from a two-set deficit to overcome John Millman 6-7(5), 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 in the Wimbledon second round on Wednesday.

Mental fortitude in the face of adversity often defines a player and Marcos exhibited his trademark fight in denying the Australian qualifier. Trailing by two sets and an early break at 0-2 in the third, he clawed back, claiming 12 of the next 15 games to level the match at two sets each.

Marcos would continue battling in the fifth, earning the decisive break in the third game and consolidating for a 3-1 advantage. He would eventually close out the thrilling victory 6-4 on his fourth match point. In total, Marcos fired 14 aces and 54 winners, converting on eight of 14 break chances to secure the victory in three hours and 44 minutes.

Marcos contested his 20th Grand Slam five-setter, improving to 13-7 overall and 3-2 at Wimbledon, where he previously defeated James Blake in 2011 and Alan Mackin in 2006. It also marked the third time Marcos has rallied from a two-set deficit in Grand Slam play, having stormed back against David Nalbandian at the 2006 Australian Open and against David Ferrer in Melbourne in 2010.

Marcos will look to improve on a 3-0 head-to-head record against David Goffin when the pair square off in Friday's third round. They have already met twice in 2015, with Marcos prevailing in four sets in the Australian Open second round and again in straight sets in Dubai.
