Marcos Saves 2 MP To Reach Nottingham Quarters

Wednesday, 22 June, 2016

Marcos completed one of the biggest comebacks of the year on the ATP World Tour, overcoming a 1-6 deficit and two match points to defeat Sam Querrey at the Aegon Open Nottingham. A week after reaching the quarterfinals on the grass of Halle, Marcos is into the quarters in Nottingham. It marks the first time he's reached the last eight in consecutive tournaments since 2012 (Brisbane & Sydney).

Marcos needed one hour and 51 minutes to overcome Querrey 1-6, 7-6(6), 6-4 on Wednesday, firing 10 aces and converting two of two break points. After winning just one game in dropping the first set in just 20 minutes, Marcos claimed 79 per cent of service points in the second. The set would extend to a tie-break, where Marcos rallied from 4-1 down, later overcoming match points at 6-5 and 8-7. He opened the third set with a bang, breaking in the first game and eventually emerging with the win on his first match point.

It marked the fourth time Marcos saved match points en route to victory since 2010. He most recently denied one in toppling Ivo Karlovic in Zagreb last year.

Marcos will bid for a return to the Nottingham semifinals when he faces second seed Pablo Cuevas on Thursday. It will be his first meeting against the Uruguayan.
