Marcos Fires Into Third Round

Wednesday, 21 January, 2015

Marcos ousted 20th seed David Goffin on Wednesday as he powered into the Australian Open third round with a 6-1, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 victory. It’s a huge win for Marcos against the in-form Goffin, who finished 2014 by being named the ATP’s Comeback Player of the Year.

Marcos fired 16 aces and converted nine of his 16 break point chances. In the fourth set, he made just one unforced error and lost only five points on serve as he raced to victory in two hours and 32 minutes.

"Having all the support here is just amazing every year," Marcos told the Sydney Morning Herald. "I'm pretty fit, that's why I'm playing good, but I think also because of the energy, the positive energy I get from the crowd. I tend to never give up here, they push me to my limits. It's pretty special."

Next up for Marcos is a big test in Grigor Dimitrov. The 10th-seeded Bulgarian dropped one set as he beat Lukas Lacko in the second round. Marcos will look to overturn a 1-5 record against Dimitrov, with his lone victory coming three years ago at Wimbledon.

Marcos is bidding to reach the fourth round at Melbourne Park – and a possible meeting with Andy Murray – for the first time since 2009. The match will be played on Friday.
