Marcos Falls To Djokovic In Indian Wells

Sunday, 15 March, 2015

Marcos fought hard, but was unable to overcome an offensive onslaught from World No. 1 Novak Djokovic on Saturday at the BNP Paribas Open. Djokovic prevailed 6-1, 6-3 in exactly one hour.

In total, Marcos fired three aces and nine winners, claiming 71 per cent of first serve points won. He was bidding to become just the fourth player to upset Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal when they were ranked No. 1. Marcos previously defeated Federer here in Indian Wells in 2010 and Nadal later that year at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati.

"Great performance against a quality opponent, against somebody that was a former Top 10 player and that knows how to play on a big stage," Djokovic stated.

Marcos, who opened his Indian Wells campaign with victory over rising star Jiri Vesely, leaves the California desert with a 7-4 win-loss record in 2015. He will return to action on the ATP Challenger Tour next week at the Irving Tennis Classic.
