Marcos is through to the second round of the Western & Southern Open on Tuesday in Cincinnati with an emphatic 6-4, 6-1 victory over Colombian lucky loser Alejandro Falla. Marcos had been due to face 11th seed Gilles Simon, but the Frenchman withdrew with a shoulder injury.
In the 63-minute contest, Marcos converted five of his six break points and lost just eight points on serve in the second set. It was his 26th win of the season. He goes onto face either Frenchman Richard Gasquet, finalist last week in Toronto, or Canada’s Milos Raonic on Thursday.
Marcos has enjoyed success at this ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament in the past. Two years ago he defeated then-World No. 1 Rafael Nadal to reach the semi-finals before falling to Roger Federer.
