Marcos Battles Through

Thursday, 20 March, 2014

Marcos is through to the second round of the Sony Open Tennis after recording a hard-fought 1-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory over Colombia’s Santiago Giraldo on Wednesday night in Miami.

After losing serve twice to surrender the opening set, Marcos fought back strongly and lost just six points on serve in the second set as he levelled the match. In a tense decider, five breaks of serve were exchanged before Marcos prevailed in one hour and 51 minutes, claiming his fourth win of the season.

Marcos will look to reach the third round in Miami for the first time since his 2006 debut when he takes on No. 24 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber on Friday at the Crandon Park Tennis Center. Marcos takes a 4-2 head-to-head lead into the contest, having beaten the German in their past two meetings: in the Halle semi-finals seven years ago and in the Munich quarter-finals in 2010.
